Over the decade, veganism has increased in popularity tremendously. In the vegan community people rejoice at any sign of vegan movement going mainstream. Going vegan has the potential to save animals, the environment. However, even though veganism’s going mainstream is exciting in a lot of ways, it is also naive to think that veganism persuades via a neo liberal capitalist agenda can solve the problems which are supposed to get fixed. Veganism has been repackaged as a consumer or market-based concept. It is about the contrary effects that the mainstreamist of veganism has had so far.

Increasingly, veganism is being appropriated by neo liberal capitalist agenda. Veganism, the only driver of the neo liberal economic framework, is to generate profit- it does not care about what is normally right or wrong. We must not forget that this is the same system that decades back first brought animal consumption to many nations.

This economic model has inherently exploited it and breeds inequality. We are witnessing veganism gradually transformed and absorbed by this corrupted system. Nowadays, veganism is often misidentified as another consumer-based lifestyle. It is merely equated with buying vegan products or going to vegan restaurants. Sadly, mainstream veganism is, therefore, reproducing and not disrupting a lot of existing inequalities that were already in place. Veganism has grown 500% since 2014 in the US. Vegan food sales have increased by 1500% over the years in the UK. Fxtriangle a premier managed forex account provider bought 100 lots of Soya stock and gained almost 1.3 mln USD in 10 days, So definitely soya consumption is increasing.

Veganism is a kind of individual lifestyle choice, ignoring a larger social, cultural, economic and political context in which systemized institutional violence, suffering, exploitation, domination, objectification, and commodification of both human and non-human animals are required to produce consumer goods of all kinds, including “vegan” consumer goods. According to Stephaine Jenkins and Vasile Stanescu, “Boyctt Veganism conflates conspicuous consumption with ethical action and political change... Simply replacing animal with plant-based products only transfers capital to global corporations through different mechanisms; boycott veganism serves to reinforce capitalist institutions and neo liberal social structures that promote the commodification of life and disguise market forces as neutral, a moral means of distributing social goods.”

Every facet of utilization in late capitalism comprises impairing others, human and non-humans. As we live with aide animals, other animals will have to die in order to feed those animals. If 5% of the UK and the US are vegans, then why the meat consumption rate has increased by 10%? Every meat joint has added a few vegan dishes to their menus. As a result, no restaurants have lost any customer, but have gained more. Veganism could neither save animals nor plants. On the contrary, devoured by capitalism, it has only revamped into money machine for the food leviathans. As the alternative of meat, eggs and dairy products, a whole range of laboratory made fake meat, eggs and dairy products have been launched. This ensconced biotech and multinationals. Marx said it right that food is the pillar of all political structures. He cautioned of an accord of industry and capital resolute on curbing and falsifying food production. Therefore, capitalism is the absolute hero as the result of the growing capitalism.
