Getting Started:

In this step you will take the map you created and use it as the basis for a storymap.

Part 2 - Save the web map and and generate a storymap app from the map.

Since a StoryMap can leverage still images and video to enhance the story you will need to consider using a third party service to store the images and videos for the storymap:

For Still Images use a site like Flickr or Pinterest

For Video, use Youtube

Part 2 - Make a Web Map Journal

After this step is completed the students will have a fully functioning Story Map that uses the map made in Part 1. The storymap will combine the map, images and videos to help tell the story.

The story map process is a chance to creatively manipulate the geography of a story that can be told in the spatial context. You will have control over the layers used as well as the geographic extent of the map to tell the story.

General Overview of the Steps:

1. The map you created will be saved

2. Once the map is saved, the map will be shared (it is recommended that 'Everyone' be selected to ensure proper access to the content for users)

3. Choose a template for your MapStory. (It is recommended you choose the StoryMap Journal app)

4. Once this has launched, you will be guided to set up the 'home' location for the storymap. It is recommended that you think of this as the 'title' slide of a presentation and use an image that is different from the map to signal that the storymap is starting.

5. You will be guided to update each location on the map through the following process:

A. Set the location, layers and associated links on the "Main Stage"

B. Then you will set up the associated content for the location on the "Side Panel"

6. This process will repeat at each location until you are satisfied with the map story.

For this activity it will only be necessary to create a map story with the following:

- A Home image

- At least two locations on campus (with at least one building that was never built)

- A closing image or images that concludes the short story

Some Best Practices to consider:

Draft the locations and the flow on paper first (if you can)
Use an image as the Home location instead of location. This will signal the start of the story for the user
Stack any external links (such as references) at the end in the concluding location
Watch the size of images used. Larger images will take longer to load.
Keep video length to 1-2 minutes maximum.
Allow for 5-10 hours a week for working on your map
