There are some hurdles to working with data in courses where the humanities are a focus:

Different platforms (PC, Mac, Chromebooks)
Availability of different software tools (Excel versions on PC vs Mac vs. Different versions of Office on all platforms)
Equity in software tools for performing different visualizations (Different versions offer different sets of tools)
Integration of platforms for developing a narrative argument and visuals (Need to post the visual to a space where narratives can be developed)

Below is a quick summary of the 'ecosystem' of tools I have experimented with and their limitations:

Tool	Limitation
Microsoft Excel	High level in variability in what Excel can do across operating systems (Mac vs. PC) Example: Office for Mac only recently added back higher level analysis tools (Analysis Toolpak). Student Mac users tend not have used Excel heavily. Even versions of Excel on the PC platform can vary in terms of the GUI.
Google Sheets	Requires a Google Account for students to use and leverage (at least at our institution where we do not use Google Tools). Variability again in student experiences with using Google Tools.
DataWrapper	This is a tool that offers an online data editing, and analysis experience. The main limitation here is that once you have developed the visualization, it needs a home where the narrative can be developed.
